## Direct answers
- Should I stay in Kahului? It works as a first or last night near the airport, or a budget base. For a beach holiday, most people stay in the resort areas.
- Do I need reservations for nearby sights? Yes for Iao Valley, Waianapanapa on the Road to Hana and Haleakala sunrise. Book on the state and national park sites in advance.
- Is West Maui open after the 2023 fires? Access has changed and some areas remain closed or ask visitors to stay away. Check current guidance and respect local wishes.
- How do I get around from Kahului? By rental car. Public transport is limited and ride-hailing is patchy outside the main towns.
