Kahului is not a resort town; it is where Maui does its shopping, and where nearly every visitor lands. Its value is as a base and a supply stop, minutes from the Iao Valley, the north-shore surf town of Paia and the start of the Road to Hana.

The green Iao Valley State Monument, with its needle-like peak, and the older town of Wailuku with its historic main street, are a few minutes west.
Iao Valley State Monument requires an advance parking and entry reservation for out-of-state visitors, as do several other Maui sites. Check the Hawaii state parks site before you go. West Maui and Lahaina were badly affected by the 2023 wildfires; check current access and respect closures.

It works as a first or last night near the airport, or a budget base. For a beach holiday, most people stay in the resort areas.

How do I get around from Kahului?
By rental car. Public transport is limited and ride-hailing is patchy outside the main towns.
